TikTok Affiliate Marketing: Eligibility, Product Tests and Commission

TikTok affiliate marketing means earning commission from qualifying sales you refer. The practical job is to help a suitable buyer evaluate a product, then measure whether the resulting commission covers your costs. A large view count alone cannot answer that question.

This guide uses TikTok Shop’s US creator rules where it gives numerical eligibility requirements. Other countries and external affiliate networks have their own terms. Sources were checked on September 14, 2026.

Identify your role before checking eligibility

In the US, TikTok distinguishes creators who promote other sellers’ products from accounts linked to a particular shop. Its creator eligibility guide sets out the differences:

US account role Follower requirement in the guide Important distinction
Affiliate creator At least 1,000 Applies to promoting marketplace products
Shop-linked official account No minimum for self-selling Does not gain the affiliate product marketplace through this role
Shop-linked marketing account No minimum for self-selling; 5,000 for marketplace access Selling linked-shop products differs from promoting other sellers

The US guide also requires creators to be at least 18, based in the US and to meet verification and policy conditions. Treat this as US-specific guidance, not a worldwide threshold. Check the onboarding screen and current local terms before planning around access.

If you own the products and intend to operate a shop, start with the seller requirements guide. If you are comparing product commissions with video rewards, read the TikTok monetization programs guide.

Choose a product you can evaluate honestly

Pick a product that fits a recurring problem in your audience. You should be able to explain who it suits, demonstrate its central function and name a meaningful limitation. Commission rate belongs in the decision, but it should not override those checks.

  • Audience fit: What specific problem does the product address?
  • Evidence: Can you test the actual item and show the result?
  • Claims: Which statements can you support without exaggeration?
  • Fulfilment: What shipping, stock and returns information will buyers see?
  • Economics: What commission is currently offered, and what will the demonstration cost?

For example, a desk-setup account could compare how a phone stand handles different viewing angles. Show the hinge, footprint and stability on a real desk. Mention if it blocks a charging cable or struggles with a heavier device. That gives a buyer information they can use, even if they decide the product is unsuitable.

Make the commercial relationship clear

For content reaching US consumers, the FTC’s influencer guidance says material brand relationships should be disclosed clearly with the endorsement. Video disclosures should be in the video itself; a buried profile note or hidden caption is insufficient. Use the platform’s applicable disclosure tools alongside clear wording, and check the rules relevant to your audience.

A direct line such as “I may earn a commission if you buy through this link” explains the relationship. Make it easy to notice when the product is recommended. Do not claim personal experience with an item you have not used or invent a result because it sounds persuasive.

Test three useful angles

Start with one product and three demonstrations. Keep the offer and observation window similar so that you can learn from the difference in presentation.

Angle What the viewer learns What to avoid
Problem and demonstration Whether the product solves a specific problem A long introduction before showing it work
Comparison The trade-off against an alternative you can actually test Unsupported claims that every competitor is worse
Buyer question The answer to a practical concern, such as size or compatibility Creating urgency without a real reason

Use a short production brief for each: viewer question, demonstration, limitation, disclosure and next step. Record the actual product and offer shown. If stock or pricing changes, that record helps you understand later differences in conversion.

Calculate commission after refunds

TikTok Shop’s US affiliate order FAQ describes commission as revenue minus refunds, multiplied by the commission rate. Estimated commission can change; cancelled or fully refunded orders do not produce commission. Settlement depends on delivery, disputes, returns and the seller’s settlement process.

A worked example, not an earnings forecast

Suppose a test records 25 qualifying orders at $40 each and a 10% commission rate. Before refunds, estimated commission is $100. If five of those orders are fully refunded, the remaining $800 of qualifying revenue produces $80 commission at the same rate.

If the sample and production cost $50, the test contributes $30 before other costs and taxes. This simplified example assumes identical prices and rates and excludes adjustments; use the actual order records for reconciliation.

Example record Amount
Initial qualifying order value $1,000
Refunded order value $200
Remaining qualifying value $800
Commission at 10% $80
Sample and production costs $50
Contribution before other costs and taxes $30

Keep a scorecard for each product test

Record views, product clicks where available, orders, refunds, estimated commission, settled commission and production costs. Also record the dates: a video posted yesterday and one posted a month ago have had different opportunities to generate and settle sales.

Review the sequence rather than declaring a winner from views alone. If people watch but do not click, inspect audience fit and the clarity of the demonstration. If they click but do not buy, examine the product page, offer and shipping information. If purchases are followed by returns, investigate whether the demonstration set the wrong expectation.

These are hypotheses to check against comments and order evidence, not automatic diagnoses. Small samples fluctuate. Wait for enough settled results to make a decision proportionate to the money you plan to spend.

When to expand, revise or stop

Expand a product test when settled results support the costs and the demonstration remains accurate. Revise when you can identify a specific unanswered buyer question. Stop when the product disappoints buyers, the offer becomes unsuitable or the economics remain weak after a fair test.

Before outsourcing production, write down the claims that can be made, the required disclosure and the evidence a creator must capture. Our niche guide can help you narrow the audience; the content licensing guide helps with permissions for reusable assets.

Common questions

Do I need 10,000 followers?

Do not import a Creator Rewards threshold into Shop affiliate onboarding. Check the role and country-specific rules above and the application currently available to your account.

Is the highest commission rate the best choice?

Only if the product fits the audience and the settled proceeds justify the work. A high rate on a product that rarely sells or is frequently returned can be less useful than a lower rate on a well-matched item.

Can I forecast income from views?

Views alone omit clicks, purchases, cancellations, refunds and commission terms. Forecast from your own comparable settled tests, show the assumptions and include a downside case.
